yahoo-connections-300x179 - Yahoo just got my mom to join a social network! I love my mom. Why wouldn’t I? She birthed me, raised me, told me not to eat the yellow snow. These are all things that have let me grow up to be the man I am today.

For all my love of my mother there are a couple of things that always erked me about her. Well her cooking isn’t that great, she tends to gasp during movies and for the life of me I can’t get her to use any social networking tools.

I don’t want my mom to start going out making friends and being a social butterfly, lets be honest here, but I would like to see her keep up with family and current friends using some social networking tools.

Well to Yahoo!’s credit I think they have done it. One of the new features in the beta of Yahoo! Mail is something called “My Connections”. This section is used to connect with friends and family and stay updated on their current status.

Much like other social networks you create a profile, update photos, and generally connect to those who need connecting. Yahoo did something beautiful by integrating it into mail. Normally I am adverse to joining another social network but since it is integrated into my mail I have very little reservations.

My mom, who I connected to on the first day, has been connecting with other family members through the social network. I am sure if I ask my mother she will say that she is not any form of social network but that is the beauty of Yahoo’s new social network, it’s almost a passive add into something that is completely integrated into my life.

While Facebook is always creating tools to integrate into my life, Yahoo mail is already there. The first thing I do every morning is check my mail… not my Facebook. I admit, Yahoo has tried social networks before (can you say yahoo 360) but by getting people to ‘back into’ a social network we might see this one turn out a little different.

Have any of you out there used this new service from Yahoo.. Have any of your moms joined?
